MS Midwives' Alliance

MMA was founded in 2009, in response to need for unity of the Midwives in MS to support each other and work together. We have grown and evolved as we have grown. This site is for Members to share resources, post training events for Midwives, and post a current list of MMA's members.

MMA's Objectives


A. To promote the health and well-being of women and infants within the State of Mississippi.

B. To support the intrinsic right of women to give birth as they choose.

C. To increase and improve communication among midwives and between midwives

and other professional and nonprofessional groups concerned with maternal and infant health.

D. To educate law makers and general public of availability and safety of midwifery.

E. To promote competency in the practice of midwifery within the State of Mississippi.

F. To promote education, training and licensure for other woman who will enter into the field of midwifery.

G. To preserve the apprenticeship model of midwifery.

H. To provide continuing educational opportunities which focus on the constant upgrading of midwifery knowledge and skills

I. To promote professional development, cooperative relationships and the sharing of talents between midwives within our state.

J. To promote the responsible practice of midwifery within our state.

K. To communicate with the Board of Midwifery.

L. To keep set-up and keep a set of statistics on midwifery within our state.

Recommendations for Standards of Care

Prenatal Care: It is the recommendation of the MMA that all midwives offer 5-10 prenatal visits including:

• Prenatal education

• Risk assessment

• Mother’s weight

• Urinalysis

• Mother’s Vital Signs; including Pulse and Blood pressure

• Fundal height measurement

• Palpation for baby’s position and size

• Fetal Heart Tones

Antenatal Care: It is the recommendation of the MMA that midwives attending out-of-hospital births remain current in Neonatal Resuscitation Certification and provide the following care during labor:

• Maternal Vital Signs every 4 hours; including, blood pressure, pulse, and temperature

• Intermittent fetal heart tone monitoring

Post Partum Care: It is the recommendation of the MMA that midwives remain with their clients for 3-4 hours after the delivery of the placenta. During this period, the following care should be provided:

• Frequent vitals, fundal, and bleeding checks

• Support in the initiation of breastfeeding

• Preform an initial newborn exam

The midwife will also:

• Schedule at least ONE in-home visits in the first week

• Schedule a telephone or in-person visit at two or three weeks

• Conduct additional visits as necessary

• File the birth certificate and discuss options of or arrangements for newborn screening

• Schedule a six-week visit to physically examine mother and baby
